Sample Hooks

1. Native metric users vs. Native imperial users Compare knowledge of units Lbf & lbm vs. N & kg 2. Scary slide of unit conversions 1000g=1000ml H20=1L=1kg=1000cm3 16oz=1lbm=0.016077ft3 H20=0.1202 US GAL

Speech 2 Outline

Introduction The imperial unit system is inefficient and causes problems Parts manufactured to be incompatible with metric problems in conversions/scholarly work inefficiency of the units Body Examples of problems caused  (miscalculations/communications) Miscalculation of gravity Metric system units are more connected Relationships across unit systems vs no/little relation Everyone else is on the metric system More universal How we can change to the metric system Metric preferred but both still printed for x number of years Conclusion Metric system more efficient Metric system is more universal 2 systems causes problems

Evaluation of Sample Proposals

Textbook Costs (1) Strengths 1. The paper does a good job of introducing the problem. 2. The paper justifies it's solution well. Weaknesses 1. The paper doesn't really offer alternative solutions 2. The paper needs specifics, talk about a certain student spent a certain amount on a book. Meal Plans (3) Strengths 1. Has a good introduction and catches the attention. 2. Does a very good job justifying why the current system doesn't work. Weaknesses 1. Doesn't talk about alternatives 2. Doesn't address the issue of actually implementing the plan Nuclear Power (2) Strengths 1. Very well justified argument 2. Good use of examples and evidence Weaknesses 1. Doesn't talk about how we can expand nuclear power 2. Needs to work on the introduction, it seemed like it just rushed in.
